Changes to my study programme…

My current programme is about Biomedical Science, it has 4 years in duration and in the first year and the first semester of the second year is designated for developing courses, which should add approximately 140 credits as a minimum.  This is a problem (problem number 1), because you have only 2 and a half years to finish your thesis. While more years you have in your thesis project you have more time to refine your results, more robust will be it and more knowledge you will acquire. In the other hand, a lot of information in these courses is unnecessary, a completely waste of time and energy. You should begin the thesis in the second semester of the first year.

The problem number two is the unequal distribution of resources and facilities, because not all the laboratories have the resources to develop different techniques and some of them don’t have the space require to do specific experiments. These limitations reduce the possibilities to develop a successful thesis and the students in this situation are more stressed and unproductive. Finally, all subjects lose, the student, his partners and the principal investigator in charged.

The problem number 3 and the last, is the future. Many PhD students look the future with fear and disappointment because, nowadays the academic insertion is very hard and difficult. Chile spends 0.4% of gross domestic product to research and technology, far from the 2.38% in average terms of the OCDE countries. Chile doesn’t waste enough money to secure the future of PhD students and is an extra stress for them.

  1. Interesting to end your analysis with a national problems and to compare to OECD countries.
